What does it mean to live a life of freedom? Many of us secretly wish our lives were freer than they are right now. Maybe we are tied down by so many obligations to work, home life, relationships, and everything that pulls our attention.
What if I told you that freedom exists even if your reality dictates otherwise? Sometimes we decide it was best to follow the structure of a normal society instead of working against the grain.
What do I mean by that? We allowed society to tell us exactly how we should live our lives. We gave autonomy over to them. So they determined for us what’s acceptable, and we believed them. So we all created this “cookie-cutter” life that I can tell, deep down, if you allow me to, that we, for the most part, hate it.
We are secretly wallowing in our lives behind closed doors. We appear one way in public but hide the truth of our lives from the world.
I say this because I too had this hidden life that, on the front, looked perfect, but behind it all was a struggle to keep up with the image of a “perfect life”. I didn’t like my career, my children’s day-to-day schedule, and the constant chase of keeping up with a life that wasn’t even mine.
Not everything that glitters up front is actually gold. Sometimes deep down, there is a longing for more. What’s your longing? Did you settle also with society’s expectations of you?
Are you genuinely content with where you are? Are you living the life you dreamed of? Or did you settle for less than your best? The best version of yourself, your life, and vice versa.
Are you the one looking at other people’s lives who have something you wish was yours, only because they chose freedom? If that’s the case, then continue to read this post.
I will highlight some much-needed, eye-opening conversations about how to break away from a life that wasn’t built with you in mind and shift into one where you can thrive for a lifetime.
Ready for the shift?
Have you been struggling with living the life you currently have, yet wishing that there was more freedom in the process? Please feel free to add to my list or ask your questions or concerns below. I would be happy to help you!
“A free life is one that is lived outside of the expectations of society. It doesn’t fit into a box that was created to keep it captive. It has to be the one that is fully in control of its destiny.”
Let’s Rediscover Who You Are
Freedom actually first starts with your identity. Who do you say that you are before the world influenced your life? I can tell you that your most gifted self was evident when you were a child.
A child is not yet heavily influenced by society. They are innocent until exposed to the “box” I mentioned earlier. The box that society created for everyone to fit in.
I’ll be the first to diagnose myself. Then you will see clearly what I mean. When I was younger, I was all about the arts. I was fond of drawing, painting, cooking, swimming, being outdoors, and just living an active lifestyle.
My identity was on full display for everyone to see. I was the one who didn’t have time for girly stuff. I’d rather climb trees and chase lizards. Yes, I was an adventurous kid.
Life, however, through parents and teachers growing up, decided that the arts weren’t a real career path. If you weren’t aspiring to be a teacher, doctor, lawyer, or entrepreneur, then you could forget about any other career options.
So I fell for it and shifted my focus from the arts that I knew I was fond of to chasing a life of science I now hate with a passion.
I had to rediscover my initial purpose and why I personally allowed the influence of others to steer me off track.
Many of you have the same story as I do. You’re probably thinking the same thing. I was a good storyteller, but I ended up as a doctor instead. I was very good at music but decided that I wanted to be a football player instead. We all have some variation from the truth about who we are.
That’s why it’s best to really laser focus on your life and see if there were any influences that shifted your perspective of who you are. More than likely, if you’re struggling or feeling stuck, I can promise you that you’re definitely in the wrong lane, living the wrong life.
It’s Not Too Late To Pivot
I know I’m going to hear that it’s too late for me to change course because I am in a career that I spent years building, or my spouse isn’t going to want to see the real version of myself, or the many excuses that I will hear.
I have a question for you, however: Isn’t it exhausting living a double life—living a life that you know isn’t your true self?
That, to me, is the most exhausting life to live—trying to keep up with a side of yourself that doesn’t fit the journey you’re on.
So it’s either you’re going to decide to settle for the life that isn’t yours, or you’re going to wake up and tell yourself that the life you truly desire to live is available for you, because you were created specifically to carry out that role and that life.
That’s to me the start of freedom that many of you are missing out on. You decided that whatever society wanted of you was going to be your life.
Then, at the end of the one life we get to live, the things I hear most often are the many regrets: ‘I regret not becoming the teacher, musician, singer, or all the different things that, deep down, I knew I was meant to be but never followed through on.’
Let this wake-up call in this blog post guide your way and show you the path to take, so that the regrets will not be your portion.
How To Course Correct Your Destiny
If you’re aware that you did take an alternative path from the norm, then the next best thing to do is to course correct. Life still has opportunities that will become available on your path if you trust the process.
If you do pivot and lean more towards what you’re called to, then I do believe that doors will be opened in your favor to help you to navigate the initial life that you were called to.
In other words, your life will always make room for you and not the other way around. The other life you had will always come with toil because you are working against who you are, instead of working towards who you were meant to be.
There’s a distinct difference, and hence it’s necessary to try to course correct as soon as you can identify the error in your particular destiny.
Then start the process of pivoting and moving more towards what you were meant to be and do in this world.
Be Careful Of The Opinions Of Others
When you know yourself fully, your gifts, talents, and abilities, you’re going to become unstoppable. Anytime anyone decides to walk on their correct path, there will be favor along the way in order to facilitate that journey.
However, there will be resistance, and you have to be strong in this area. There will always be people who would love for you to live through their fears, anxieties, and worries.
For the relative who told you to go become a nurse for job stability, even though you know very well you are good at finances. You really wanted to become an accountant, but your relative thought that you would be better off being a nurse.
Then you took a detour from your destiny to fulfill a fear of job instability that they themselves had. This is why we have so many people out of alignment with their own lives and journey.
We did not trust our own intuitions and decided to live vicariously through the lives of others. That goes for parents who want everybody to be a doctor in their family because of the prestige of such a role, when you know deep down you would rather be an entrepreneur.
Yes, it happens all the time, and I can tell you that’s one of the biggest reasons why there is so much anger, frustration, depression, anxiety, and worry in this world.
Because if many of us were in our correct lane doing exactly what we were destined to be doing, this world would be a happier place.
Peace and contentment are the result of a life well lived when you walk in your correct lane, and you’re doing exactly what you were made for.
Freedom Will Be The Result
I personally like to read people’s autobiographies. Especially the ones who walked in their specific lane. Their stories are amazing! I can also see how their life pivoted throughout that particular journey.
The actress, for example who knew she was called to that destiny and stood firm even through many rejections or setbacks in the industry, but then went on to win several awards for her dedication to the field.
She was also that child who would always be found with dolls when she was younger, playing different roles as she narrated a story with them.
She stood firm in her conviction that this was her path. Nothing else made sense. Yet, even though she may have gotten pushback from family, friends, or society that she wasn’t made for that life, she continued on her path regardless.
Now, looking back, she can say that she lived a life she knew was hers unapologetically. She decided not to live through the lives others wanted for her instead.
Freedom, regardless of the different struggles throughout her career, was her guiding light. She knew deep down that this was her lane.
Let that also be your story. Don’t neglect your own journey and be true to who you are and were created to be. You only have one life to live, and it’s fleeting as we know it.
Let it be that you lived in freedom regardless of what society determined for you.
I hope that these 5 tips will help you to clearly redefine who you are, what your gifts, talents, and abilities are, and to create the life of freedom that only comes with living exactly who you were created to be in this world. That’s the only path to true freedom!
